Mennan Usta, a Man Worthy of a Documentary
I want to talk about Mennan Usta, who participated as a speaker at the Informatics Summit held during the 2008 CeBIT Information Technology Fair. Among dozens of businessmen and academics who spoke at the event, the only person who truly left a mark on me was Mennan Usta.
Today, I joined a conversation about people who achieved great things without a formal academic background or who dropped out of school. While people were mentioning examples like Bill Gates dropping out of college, Mennan Usta came to my mind. I’d like to briefly share his story with you.
Mennan Usta, who is 54 years old and only a primary school graduate, is known as a mechanical genius. At industrial fairs, he can reproduce any machine he sees after examining it for just 10 minutes. Because of this extraordinary talent, he has been banned from entering industrial fairs in Europe and America — yet he always finds a way to get in.
Working out of his workshop in Küsget for over 10 years, Mennan Usta has built countless machines. Recognized as one of the most important machine manufacturers in Gaziantep — and even in Turkey — he has produced everything from carpet yarn machines and cookware production machines to pistachio processing machines and knit yarn machines. He invested 7 million dollars into R&D for these machines.
The machines made by Mennan Usta have been exported to Syria, Pakistan, Morocco, Romania, and Iran. He was the first in Turkey to successfully produce a knit yarn machine, and he sold it to Brazil — becoming a craftsman who exports technology.
In addition to his talent, Mennan Usta is also a very charismatic and likable person. I want to emphasize that he is someone truly worthy of having a documentary made about him. Beyond his contributions to the manufacturing sector, he also significantly supports the national economy by creating employment.
